When Hazel meets Harry

Making Days Count 2
Harry's view:

According to a comment by Flighty on my previous post, Harry, my newly found motivator, could actually be a ‘she’....Hazel, in fact. (as in Corkscrew Hazel)! That would be a great name for a cartoon character – can’t you picture Corkscrew Hazel with her tangled mass of ringlets and curls?

I have solved the dilemma of ‘Hazel meets Harry’ by deciding to call the tree Harzel, which means it still can be Harry for short. Thanks for the info and link, Flighty.

It was another crisp and clear day. I went outside and noticed a kinglet at the suet feeder. I was able to get quite close to take the photos below.

Around lunch time, I set off for my walk to see Harzel. I took many photos along the way:

I took a closer look at Harry to check on its branches.

The path down to the beach is edged with bushes, shrubs and trees making it an attractive habitat for many species of birds. I saw a Varied Thrush, but couldn’t get a clear photo. I was delighted, however, to get this one of a Spotted Towhee and a Song Sparrow.

The tide was in, but I walked along the edge on the rocks before heading back home. The water seemed crystal clear, and there was still frost on many of the logs washed up on the beach.

The walk takes about 45 mins round trip if I don’t stay put for long. On warmer days, I usually spend more time there.

Once I returned, I began downloading the photos of the kinglet. As I was doing this, I noticed some activity outside so I quietly opened the front door and with my camera in hand, was able to take a video of a variety of visitors to the suet feeders. I have added music to cover some sort of knocking noise in the background.

Although I didn’t seem to get much accomplished (like not taking down the tree and ornaments, for example), I did feel like I made the day count by enjoying such a beautiful part of it outside with nature.

The snowmen on the tree can wait until tomorrow :)

  2. Looks as though Harry has had a haircut at some time in the past.
Lovely bird selection at the feeders.
What bright red eyes the Spotted Towhee has.

  3. What a most enjoyable post to read and look at.
You're most welcome for the information, and thanks for the mention. After reading your previous post I went googling as I was intrigued by 'Harry Lauder's Walking Stick' tree.
I think that you achieved plenty, besides which taking the tree can always wait for another day!

  4. Hi Selby ~ Thank you! Hope it's a great year for everyone!

Hi John ~ Yes, John, it seems that Harry has indeed has his hair lopped. I had a closer look today and will post later on. I was glad the Spotted Towhee's red eyes showed up (not usually what we want on photos that need red-eye removal ;)) Features like that help me identify the bird!

Hi Flighty ~ pleased to hear you enjoyed the post and I'm glad you looked up more info on Harzel. I've been for my walk, and am now going to attack the Christmas tree. Watch out all you snowman and other bits and bobs... ;)
