Saturday's Sand and Squiggles

Saturday is usually for catching up with things at home, which is how my day began (after chasing Mr. Sneaky off the back deck!). After doing some banking, grocery shopping, and buying new walking shoes...I drove home by the beach and realized the tide was out. Once I was home, I decided to keep up my walking regimen ~ so on with the jacket and with a click of the stopwatch, I was on my way.

The first thing I noticed was the amount of tree trimming that had been done to clear the view from above.

Robin found a spot to look over the changed landscape, which will grow back quickly once spring arrives. Robin's colourful feathers brightened up an otherwise grey day.

I was glad to walk (in my old shoes!) on the damp sand ~ beats stumbling over the rocks!

A wide expanse that looks so much more welcoming with blue sky and sunshine ~ however, there was some activity other than the sand, shells and squiggles.

Here are some Mew Gulls
~ a smaller and much more 'refined' looking bird than the usual Glaucous Gulls.

This seems to be a Western Gull

When I was approaching the beach, I could hear a very loud consistent bark of a seal, but by the time I reached the sand, it was quiet ~ I think it was probably following the fishing boat.

I heard the call of an eagle and saw one land on a tree overhead ~

Another call and he was a silhouette in the distance:

On the way home, I noticed that the wild clematis seed pods had a glow to them so have made a segment of the photo into my new header.

Catkins were hanging in profusion ~ but would have benefited by a touch of golden sun!

It was a 20 minute walk to the beach and I was home in about an hour. It was good to breathe some fresh sea air ~ and also continue my daily walking program :)

  1. That was just what needed Glo, a virtual walk on the beach! :o) That clears away the cobwebs... well, virtually! :o)

  2. Hi Daffy ~ your comment reminded me that I didn't put in the little video I took, which I have rectified! Glad to hear the virtual sea air cleared your cobwebs ;) Hope you are enjoying your weekend and that your Sat. shopping expedition was successful :)

  3. Brrrrr, ok, today's images are chilly to look at. I don't know how you walk by the water in winter.

Where my aunt lives near Brighton in the south of England, it's freezing cold along the seaside even in the summer but she goes for a walk every night, uses very little heating, and opens her kitchen windows even in winter! And she was born in the tropics!

The new clematis header is very pretty in its delicate fluffiness.

  4. These photos make me want to take a deep breath of cool air. That robin seems to be taking in the view just as you are. Glo, what are those squiggly things in the sand?

  5. It was a shame that the weather wasn't sunnier.
That looks to be such a good way to exercise, in a relaxing sort of way!
I hope that you enjoyed Sunday, and have a good week.
I like the new header! xx

  6. Hi Liv ~ I must say I don't think I'm quite as hardy as your aunt ~ good for her, I say! When I have my trusty jacket on, I don't feel the cold at all ~ it's so invigorating breathing in that sea air, and so calming to just be part of nature :) It's much more inviting with a bit of sun though :) Glad you like my fluffy header!

Hi Nikki ~ How about we share some of my cool and some of your warm air? It would be just about right!
The robin may be a bit stunned, like I was, when noticing all the trimming back that had been done! Now those squiggly things ~ I'm going to check again about these ~ I think they might be known as sand worms, but they might also have something to do with the clam holes. When you step beside the holes, water often squirts up. I'll be doing some research! Thanks for piquing my curiosity ~ sometimes we just accept things as "squiggly". LOL

Hi Flighty ~ Sunshine would have been nice, however it wasn't snowing and it wasn't raining, so it was perfect! There's steep steps down (and/or up) so it's good exercise-type walk. Sunday was great as you'll see by my next blog entry. Glad you like my fuzzy header ~ I'll be changing into something more colourfully spring before long ;)
