Guess what?!

As you can probably tell from my voice in the next video ~ I was rather ticked that another snowstorm hit today when the forecast was for rain. Normally, I would take this week off, but because I'm changing jobs next Monday, I was hoping to get some finalizing done, so that my replacement would have an easy transition ~ However safety comes first, so after doing some school banking and mail pickup, and taking a quick look at the cold uninviting snow-covered empty school, I turned for home ~

Pictureless!

It was wonderful having my sons up for Christmas with girlfriends ~ having 4 extra people staying over for a few days makes life interesting! Our turkey from the farm was amazing! The meal was so yummy and with those extra hands, the clean-up was done by the others ~ not me :) Since my 'guests' were all in the 20's and 30's, there were some entertaining conversations. We all had fun playing 'Cranium' Now that they've all gone, I've been washing sheets and towels ~ and eating leftover turkey dinners!

However, cleaning up became a bit of a problem when my central vacuum cleaner power nozzle broke a prong! Anyway to make a 2 day story short, I have replaced the parts needed after making two trips. I must have gained strength from digging out the driveway, because when I opened the blinds on the front door, they broke and came crashing down around me...so I had to replace them too! Tonight I tried to get my head around the idea of going into work tomorrow ~ at least it will be quiet as the students don't return until Jan. 5 when I'll start my new job.

I haven't even had time to take photos ~ can you believe that!

Happy New Year, everyone ~ I'll try and get some photos tomorrow!

Meowy Christmas :)

Christmas in Town

Today I ventured out to get my windshield replaced in my car after a rock pit had spread horizontally across the window due to the cold weather. I decided to have a look around the town and do a bit of shopping while it was being replaced. I carried only one bag so that certainly limited many purchases!

I saw a couple of sights that I found amusing:

A carved wooden Mountie who looked frozen solid ~ and sported a "high hat" ~

Snow was piled up everywhere ~

I walked some more and then headed to the library where I picked up a couple of books, and read until it was time to get my car ~ I nearly nodded off, it was so warm and cosy in there, not like outside ~

The street lamps came on ~

I picked up my car, stopped for some groceries and back home I went to find that the grader had scraped our street and left a foot of hard crusty snow across the driveway! I managed to "hop" the car over it, and then dug it out!

I made some shortbread and a steamed pudding after supper ~ and tomorrow is Christmas Eve and it's ...........

Digging Day!

Since I have been home for a few days, I find it hard to keep track of the days and dates ! I took these photos last night and meant to post them before I went to bed, but....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The storm seems to have stopped for now, although it is forecast that there are flurries for the next few days with temps around freezing. It looks like it will warm up to about 7 degrees by Dec. 29, when I'll go back to work at my old job, before starting the new one on Jan. 5.

Tomorrow I have an appointment to get my windshield replaced ~ it cracked all the way across from a rock pit. Today is for digging, and hopefully some baking :)

I thought I'd better add a bit of colour to this post:

Clear - for now!

Edited to add: Another storm warning has been issued, so I've decided to stay home and cook a big pot of chicken something or other in case of power outage.

(Caps are from the site)
A PACIFIC FRONTAL SYSTEM APPROACHING THE BRITISH COLUMBIA COAST WILL COLLIDE WITH ENTRENCHED ARCTIC AIR TO PRODUCE ANOTHER WINTER STORM. THE STORM IS FORECAST TO REACH VANCOUVER ISLAND THIS AFTERNOON THEN MOVE TO THE SUNSHINE COAST AND THE LOWER MAINLAND TONIGHT. SNOWFALLS OF 10 TO 20 CENTIMETRES OR MORE ARE FORECAST BUT WILL VARY DRAMATICALLY ACROSS THE SOUTH COAST. SUBTLE CHANGES IN WIND DIRECTION CAN RESULT IN MUCH HEAVIER SNOW. AREAS SUBJECT TO THE STRONGEST ONSHORE SOUTHEASTERLY AND EASTERLY WINDS SUCH AS THE EAST COAST OF VANCOUVER ISLAND ARE AT GREATEST RISK OF HEAVY SNOW...

When I opened the front door to start digging out the walkway, I noticed I'd had an early visit from Santy Claws!

Today I sprayed some vegetable oil on my snow shovel before starting and I think it helped the snow slither off easier. Here's the cleared path ~

Photobucket

I had the rest of the driveway to clear so that I could get my car out of the garage if needed. It took me 1 1/2 hours today to do the walkway and driveway, so all told that's 5 1/2 hours of digging in two days ~ and I did it all by myself :) My camera battery died before I had time to take a photo but I remembered tonight ~ there are icy patches but at least it's mostly cleared.

Photobucket

I noticed the mountains had their fair share ~

Later on I put the lights and decorations on the tree. The coloring in the photo is a bit odd because I didn't want to use the flash. I'll try and get a better picture that shows how it really looks. In the meantime:

and isn't that Frog Newton imitating an ornament ~ I tell you, that frog does not like to be left out of anything!!

More snow forecast for Sunday. Nobody needs to be dreaming of a White Christmas this year!

White Out!

Ok, where were all my blogging helpers and their snow shovels???

On Wednesday (yesterday), the snow began in earnest (and here, too). My goodness, it was like driving through mountains and ruts of icing sugar. Eventually I made it home from work after making sure the children all got home safely from school. There was at least a 6 inch layer of snow in my driveway, but by driving forward and backward, I finally made it to the garage door, and slithered in. The snow continued all night, and by morning there was at least 24 inches on the back deck!

First I'll show today's photos of the juncos ~ the previous dish of bird food is about 12 inches under, so I had to put another one out...and then only one bird would eat at a time, so I added another dish which seemed to solve the problem.

After taking numerous photos of views from various doorways and windows of the house, I put on my snow pants, my winter jacket, boots, and gloves to do the inevitable. Dig. It was 10:00 a.m. My son was unable to get home last night because of the snow and roads, so it was all up to me! While I was out there, 5 white swans flew overhead! They were beautiful to see! No photo though.

Still more to go tomorrow, it shouldn't take too long I hope ~

At first the snow was quite powdery and fairly easy to lift, but as the sun came out it became stickier and hung on to the blade of the shovel. After 4 hours, that was it for the day! I felt good, though although my left arm in particular knows it has been busy heaving!

Forecast for sun, a few more flurries and continued below zero weather. I can't drive out of the garage yet, but at least my son was able to drive in today. I'm happy to stay home for now ~ and hopefully decorate the tree tomorrow.
