The Bird and the Bee

It was a gorgeous day today, much too pleasant to be working indoors! The minute I arrived home, I was out in the fresh air having a look around the garden ~ checking on the very small rose buds, the peas and sweet peas ~ and then noticed some action around the nuthatch establishment! The nesting box is at the far end of the garden and on the top of the clothesline, nearly lost in the tree branches this year. I sat down on a garden chair with my camera, and looked way up to see if I could catch a shot or two.

Here's a little video ~ it's a bit shaky because I had it on zoom and my camera was handheld...would have been much steadier if I had used a tripod. The "neep neep" you can hear is the nuthatch making its usual monotone call.

After bird watching, I headed back to the deck where I spotted a lovely big bee besotted by a white pansy.

and a video ~

Sunny warm weather is forecast through until Monday, so roll on weekend!

EDIT to ADD ~ UK Nuthatch ~ info and click on the Listen - Play button on the site to hear how different the UK bird sounds to my "neep neep"!

  1. No wonder you wanted to be outside with all that wildlife about Glo.

Lovely post and I enjoyed the "neep neep" of your Nuthatch. Different sound to the one we have over in the UK.

And thanks for visiting my blog and the link from yours :D

  2. Nice to see you here, Tricia :) I'll have to see if I can find the sound of a UK nuthatch ~ perhaps it has a bit of an accent ;) Flighty mentioned Springwatch and there is a photo of a nuthatch on the website. It looks very similar to ours. Hope to see you here again ~ and I'll be dropping by your site again as well :)

  4. How marvellous to have a Nuthatch using the nest box. I have never seen one. Your hand held video is a lot steadier than I can manage.

Great shots of the bee as well. Love the slide show.

  5. I do like that first photo, and they sing very differently don't they!
The plot was buzzing with bees today.
It looks like we're both going to enjoy some sunshine over the weekend so have a good one! xx

  6. Hi Selby ~ i'm pleased you enjoyed my photos of the bird and bee :)

Midmarsh John ~ Yes, I was pleased to know the nuthatches have taken residence in the nesting box again this year. They are known to nest in tree holes, but this bird nest is so far up in the trees, there's not much difference! The first year it was up, quite a few years ago, we had tree swallows which had a beautiful green tinge to their feathers. The nuthatches also enjoy eating from the suet feeder on the deck. Cute little birds, although their "neep neep" isn't as joyous or melodic sounding as most of the other birds!

Flighty ~ I'm so pleased the forecast is for good weather for you, too. It makes such a difference when the sun shines. (especially on weekends for me). There seems to be many buzzing flying things around now, much more than when the blossoms were out! Looking forward to hearing how the plot is fairing over the weekend. You have a good one, too.

  8. Hello Daffy ~ That nuthatch photo was the best of the lot, as it was difficult to get a good view looking from that angle ~ glad you liked it. I wasn't concerned about the bee because he seemed totally unaware of my presence! He was totally immersed in that pansy. Wasps on the other hand... nasty! Glad you are feeling a lot better!

  9. Apparently my dad has a UK nuthatch in his garden, I would love one in mine and so lovely to have one in yours. I didn't realise they had regional accents! My garden is buzzing with bees at the moment too. x

  10. Hi Louise ~ I hope you get a nuthatch in your garden ~ over here, they like to nest in holes in trees, and the nest box that is up in my garden is way up on the top of my washing line ~~ and now has branches around it. The bees are very busy in the rhodo flowers now!
