A Love Affair in September
Oh, don’t be in a rush; I’ve much to do
before you come and sweep away in haste,
sweet summer said, as autumn coolness blew.
Pink rosebud seeks my warmth, and others, too,
and still there is the harvesting to taste.
Oh, don’t be in a rush; I’ve much to do.
Unfolding petals offer nectar’s dew,
ambrosia in abundance, spirit-laced,
sweet summer said, as autumn coolness blew.
Just look, before you make your grand debut!
Those steadfast leaves, not ready to be chased,
Oh, don’t be in a rush; I’ve much to do.
Step back a bit until your time is due;
No point in turning growth to garden waste,
sweet summer said, as autumn coolness blew.
But autumn knew how quickly seasons flew
for she, herself, had often felt replaced.
Oh, don’t be in a rush; I’ve much to do,
sweet summer said, as autumn coolness blew.
Believe me, autumn said, we both can share,
a kiss of coolness for your rosebud flush ~
Together let us have a love affair.
While you are shining apple and the pear,
I’ll bronze their leaves ~ a golden copper blush,
Believe me, autumn said, we both can share.
Sweet summer caught the glints of russet hair
in wavy tendrils, highlights in her brush ~
Together let us have a love affair.
The colours of our bond, beyond compare;
such beauty, as the song of warbling thrush.
Believe me, autumn said, we both can share.
Now, shall we join the pumpkins, over there,
entwined among the vines so large and lush?
Together let us have a love affair.
Sweet summer smiled;
she knew such love was rare.
No longer did she feel the need to rush.
Believe me, autumn said, we both can share,
Together let us have a love affair.
