Cherry Tree Part 2

So carrying right along as if I haven't missed a day (or 12) ...

In the dark of night, when the glass sliding door is open and I am only separated from the outside deck by the screen door, I hear rustling and chattering in the cherry tree. I am in the middle of an exciting part in a novel...as my heart beats faster, I turn to glance towards the darkness.

Quietly, I put down my ebook and pick up my camera, turn out the reading light, and tiptoe through the dark towards the sliding door. I gently slide the screen door open, turn on the outside light and point and shoot!

Bandido and his pilfering gang are back at work!

Cherries hanging in couplets take on the appearance of eerie iridescent eyes glaring through the night.
My imagination shivers.

I turn off the outside light,
close the screen and glass doors,
and return to the safety of my novel.

  1. A beautiful bit of prose. Great little mammals to accompany or inspire it.

  2. I guess I never cease to be amazed at the boldness of these raccoons. They don't seem the least bit fazed that their photographs are going to be on the INTERNET for all the world to see! Hope they leave some cherries for you.

  4. One of my all time favourite animals. Somebody ought to be enjoying the cherries. :)

  5. Thanks Adrian. They are cute little devils, but play havoc with gardens, lawns and fruit!!! ... and they're not scared o'nothin...

Hi Nicki ~ Bold as brass they are...and I think they thrive on the notoriety! The cherries were lousy this year...split and then splat! We had to buy cherries for the first time ever. Too much rain when they were developing.

Hi UHDD - Their masked eyes don't disguise their antics at all ~ bold is so true!

Hi Hilary ~ They are attractive looking creatures...and I don't mind sharing the cherries on top of the tree, but they splat them all over the place and break branches. Such is life when I seem to live in a wildlife sanctuary ;)

  6. Whoops sorry I've been so long in commenting on this post!
We have this constant 'I like them but...' with a lot of wildlife but on balance I'm glad that they're around for us to see, and photograph. Flighty xx

  7. Raccoons do pose a problem here in urban areas especially if they get in your house or basement. However, it's understandable that they are attracted to food sources...that's why folk are discouraged to leave pet food outside. They are smart critters with cute faces.
