At home - a poem

Some jumbled piles of branches
Are strewn in my backyard -
Debris from stormy weather,
Yet I was caught off guard...

For munching on the branches,
A deer, in broad daylight
Had turned to see me watching
And kept me in its sight.

I left it to its business
And went inside to bake.
I checked a little later
And did a double take...

 \
For there, beneath a cedar,
It found a comfy nest,
And curled up quite contented,
To take a sheltered rest.

It stayed there for an hour’s time
Before it left the back.
I glanced out my front window
And halted in my tracks!

The bird bell swung in motion!
A head without a beak
Was nibbling bits of bird seed,
Slim pickin’s, so to speak.

Now is it any wonder
I have no need to roam,
When creatures of the planet
Drop by when I’m at home?

  2. You know, it's fantastic that you were able to get some shots of wildlife coming to you! I don't suppose you left something more appropriate for the deer to eat (so he'll leave the birdseeds alone!).

    1. Thanks, Nikki ~ Deer seem to find enough to eat in the garden without any extra help from me :) I could put the bird feeders up higher in the tree...of course, then giraffes would probably find their way here ;) I think a rabbit is involved in the plant nibbling as well, as I have found signs... and all the grape hyacinth flowers have been nibbled off ~ those pretty plants usually circle my fruit trees, but not this year!

  3. Wonderful.....it is much more relaxed than our deer.

    1. Thanks Adrian ~ a little too relaxed perhaps! During the snowy weather, I noticed a bare patch where the deer was resting in the photos above, so I think this particular sheltered area could be a regular sleeping spot.

  4. What a lovely little story
Your deer seems so at ease
    Around your home
    Wild creatures roam
    Nature's wonders never cease

    1. Oh, thank you for your special rhyme!
      It's true, deer do appear,
      then wander through
      to munch and chew
      with no apparent fear!

  5. Lovely pictures and poem. Deer are in the news here in the UK at present as it's said that there are now too many of them and a cull is needed.
I like Elaine's poetic comment! Flighty xx

    1. Thanks Flighty! Yes, large deer populations are a hot and controversial topic here as well. I loved Elaine's comment, too :)

  6. What an amazing visitor to have in the garden Glo, so sweet! Love the poem too :-) Your videos don't show on my iPad but I was able to watch it on the laptop so didn't miss out.

I don't know what happened to the comment I left on your scavenger hunt but I know I left one :-( I did miss the last post though but have enjoyed catching up with it and particularly liked the Northern Flicker photos and the beautiful dog :-)

  8. What a great sighting, maybe that's why the bird feed disappears so quickly.
